Machu Picchu visitor limit set

Machu Picchu Visitor Limit Set

The Regional Director of Culture for the Cusco area, Julio Dueñas, recently confirmed that the number of visitors allowed into the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, Peru, is to remain unchanged at 2500 per day. During recent days many tourists have been turned away at the gates of Machu Picchu as the daily limit on visitors has been strictly enforced.

In a recent statement Julio Dueñas said “Since Machu Picchu is considered as a world cultural heritage site, there are standards that we have to meet. These standards include the recommendations made by UNESCO and the Master Plan of Machu Picchu, which states that only 2500 people can enter the citadel per day”. These measures have been implemented in order to reach a sustainable balance between the preservation of the archaeological site of Machu Picchu and tourism demands at this popular destination.
