Mention the name Fernando de Noronha to a local in Brazil and watch as their face lights up with excitement as they begin to hurl superlatives in hopes of describing the perfection that is Fernando de Noronha. The secret is now out, and now that we’ve covered the basics of this “Heaven on Earth” in our last blog article, we’d like to dive into some of our favorite activities included in all of our Fernando de Noronha packages.
♦ Sailing around the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago
After a day of settling into your exclusive hotel and some free time to explore Fernando de Noronha, you’re ready to hop aboard and set sail for your first tour of the islands. Leaving from Porto de Santo Antonio, the boat passes the beaches of Biboca, Cachorro and Conceicao, where you will stop for a quick swim. We recommend bringing diving equipment with you, as the crystal clear waters make for the perfect place to scuba dive and get up close and personal with the marine life. You will stop near the famous Morros dos Dois Irmaos, which is the perfect setting to watch the sun set following an incredible day in paradise.
The next day you’ll set sail once again for another thrilling experience exploring the islands that make up this stunning archipelago. You’ll be able to observe the wide variety of unique rock formations and seabird nests spread throughout the islands before heading to the far end of the islands for some absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of your natural surroundings. Along the way look out for schools of dolphins as they are known to swim alongside the boats, acting as if they’re your underwater tour guides. This picture perfect setting is one to be remembered, so be sure to bring a waterproof camera to capture the experience both above ground and underwater.
♦ Dolphin Bay
One of the most important breeding grounds in the world for Spinner dolphins, Baia dos Golfinhos (Dolphin Bay) offers a unique view of these playful creatures in their natural habitat. Off-limits to all except accredited scientists, hundreds of dolphins arrive around 6am and depart between 3pm and 5pm on their nightly feeding trip around the island. Whether from the cliffs overlooking the bay (be sure to pack your binoculars) or from the boat, you can watch as they spin through the air in acrobatic fashion, seemingly just as excited to be there as you are.
♦ Sightseeing on Fernando de Noronha Island
Though much of the focus on Fernando de Noronha is on the beach and the surrounding marine life, there is plenty to do while on land. A walk through the capital Vila los Remedios is a must while on the islands. The tiny village will give you a look at times gone by with its cobblestone streets and remnants of old forts and 18th century houses. For those who like hiking, there are 5 main trails, 3 inside the National Marine Park and 2 on the outside. This gives you the opportunity for roughly 12 hours of hiking all with varying degrees of difficulty.
As there are no cars on the island, those not interested in taking in the island on foot have limited options for getting around on land. A fun alternative is renting a dune buggy, which gives you access to some of the more secluded parts of the island. Alternatively, you can saddle up and go horseback riding allowing you to really soak up the peacefulness of Fernando de Noronha, cooled by the fresh sea air.
Whether you’re looking for a luxurious and serene escape from the “real world” or an action packed trip exploring one of the most untouched places on the planet; Fernando de Noronha will blow you away with its charming simplicity and breath-taking scenery.
