♦ Explore the beauty of Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast mixes the natural beauty of it’s famous beaches with the dazzling history of the country’s capital, San Jose. Don’t let “capital” intimidate you – Costa Rica’s enchanting city is small enough to navigate by foot and grand enough to keep you entertained all day. With impressive 19th century architecture, independently owned coffee shops brewing local beans, and the late night rhythm of salsa, there’s no chance you’ll miss an opportunity to enjoy authentic Costa Rican culture. Follow up your urban adventure with a visit to Cahuita National park, where 600 acres of protected crystal waters offer visitors the chance to snorkel, sail, and unwind amidst 35 different species of coral and over 123 different species of fish. The park’s beach, revered as one of Costa Rica’s least developed, is easily accessible and well worth the short drive in.
Guatemala’s a shockingly simple answer when it comes to affording an authentic indigenous experience. Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Center beloved for its colorful cobblestone streets, is especially inspiring during this time of year as the city wholly prepares for one of the world’s most elaborate Semana Santas. Don’t panic if you can’t make it – though the Easter festival attracts the city’s greatest artists, textile designers, musicians, and religious figures for a week long celebration – the rest of the city absorbs and holds onto those decorations and contagious energy for visitors who arrive much later.
Belize offers travelers an unmissable opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to relaxing on a dreamy beach and venturing into the mountains. ♦ Guatemala: Antigua, Tikal & Lake Atitlán
Guatemala is a revelation when it comes to safely and affordably experiencing authentic indigenous culture. From the colonial streets of Antigua and towering Mayan temples of Tikal to the glistening waters of Lake Atitlán,; Guatemala has something truly extraordinary for every family member to enjoy.
Antigua’s cobblestone streets and volcanic surroundings are particularly enchanting in the spring as the city prepares for it’s world famous Semana Santa (Easter week). The UNESCO World Heritage Center transforms with colorful processions of intricately made textiles and art – a sight that, if you’re lucky enough to see, is sure to awaken all of your senses.
If it’s ancient history you’re after, the ancient Mayan citadel of Tikal is to the northern Guatemalan rainforests as the Inca Machu Picchu is to Peru. Nuzzled in dense greenery, the iconic Lost World Pyramid, Temple of the Jaguar, and Temple IV are beautifully preserved pre-Columbian treasures that will have you second-guessing the disappearance of their original peoples.
Continue the Mayan adventure with a tour to Guatemala’s most impressive landscape, Lake Atitlán. A tour across the unbelievably blue lake surrounded by volcanoes takes visitors to surrounding Maya villages where they can experience intricate Mayan traditions that have lasted the test of time.

♦ Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast: Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio & the Osa Peninsula
Regardless of how old you are, nothing says “spring break” more than Costa Rica during dry season. The Pacific Coast is particularly spectacular at this time of year because it’s rugged shores and low hanging tropical forests are freshly green and full of otherworldly wildlife. Never-ending golden sand beaches and some of the most impressive sunsets you’ll ever see make Tamarindo the perfect place to rest and relax. Nature-lovers will gush over a kayak trip through the Mangrove Wildlife Reserve, and how you can spot the occasional endangered Leatherback turtle through it’s crystal clear water.
Further along the central coast and just a few hours drive from the capital of San José, the white shores of Manual Antonio National Park echo the sounds of the jungle. Monkeys, armadillos, and toucans are just some 109 mammal and 184 bird species you can find in Costa Rica’s smallest national park. Don’t be fooled by size though, action and adventure swing from every tree with the park’s renowned zip-lines.
If adventure to you means exploring something unexplored, the Osa Peninsula, often referred to as the “last wild frontier of Costa Rica,” will surely meet the challenge. The relatively untouched beaches, forests, and wide range of wildlife, gives visitors a glimpse into Costa Rica’s nature at its core. For a good adrenalin rush to send you home smiling, try a noctural walk through the jungle or a rappelling class down the region’s impressive waterfalls.
As the holidays creep closer you might be facing the stress of awkward family reunions or just dreading the colder days of winter. Why not break with tradition and spend the holidays exploring new lands with your closest girlfriends in Latin America?

While the main attraction is obviously tasting some of the world’s most delicious coffee, the region is home to gangly wax palms and rare endemic birds that are sure to keep your eyes and ears busy if you choose to delve into the surrounding jungle on foot or horseback. Because the farmers grow, harvest, and process the beans by hand, seeing the coffee region during the main harvest from September to December is absolutely captivating.
The jungle surrounding Colombia’s Coffee Triangle is sure to be just as enchanting as your morning cup of Colombian coffee
♦ Atacama Desert, Chile
The thought of light dancing across an airy salt flat while flamingos roam around volcanoes might sound like a scene from “The Little Prince,” but it’s a common sight at Salar de Atacama, Chile’s largest salt flat in the heart of the Atacama Desert.
For girlfriends who wish they could adventure to another planet together but are maybe waiting on space travel to develop, the 40,000 square mile desert in the northern half of Chile is the next-best thing to Mars.
The vast region is home to otherworldly rocks, ethereal salt flats, and the driest climate in the world. The celestial wonderland of the Atacama Desert offers visitors unique experiences from sunrise to sunset, whether it’s visiting the hissing El Tatio Geysers in the early in the morning, or watching the sun set over rock formations at Valle de la Luna. The stunning Cayes & Atolls of Belize are waiting for you / Source
♦ Where is Ambergris Caye?
Ambergris Caye is the largest island of Belize and is located to the northeast of the country surrounded by the beautiful clear, warm waters of the Caribbean. The island is just 25 miles long and 5 miles across at its widest point, though much of it is less than half a mile wide. Running parallel to the island and just a half-mile from its coast is the second largest reef system in the world, the Belize Barrier Reef, which is the islands prime asset. The island was once home to the ancient Maya who created the island by digging the narrow channel between it and Mexico. The Caye has a diverse mix of languages from English and Spanish to Creole and Maya speakers adding to the culture of the island.
♦ Traveling to Ambergris Caye
Located 35 miles northeast of Belize City, Ambergris can be easily reached by sea or air. Both ways are beautiful although it is certainly quicker and drier by air taking between just 15 to 30mins by plane. There are dozens of daily flights between Belize City and Ambergris Caye’s airport, San Pedro (SPR). Flights leave approximately every 30 minutes from the Municipal Airport and the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City adding to the ease of traveling to the island. If you’re arriving to Belize on an international flight and flying straight to Ambergris Caye, it is better to leave from Belize City’s International Airport. However, if you’re already in Belize City or traveling around the country, it is better to fly from the Municipal Airport as it is closer to downtown. If you’d prefer to go by sea, scheduled boats travel regularly between Belize City and Ambergris Caye although be warned, you’re likely to get wet as most are open speedboats. The journey takes anywhere between 1hr 15mins and 2 hours so if you’re traveling by boat, you should be prepared for a longer and wetter wait to reach the paradise island of Ambergris.

♦ The best time to go to Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye’s climate and temperature is relatively constant throughout the year with highs during the day of around 85°F and lows at night of around 75°F. If you’re going to Ambergris Caye, you will definitely be taking part in some water-based activities and the welcoming clear Caribbean waters typically stay above 80°F. Ambergris Caye’s dry season runs from February through to June while July through to January is considered the wet season. The humidity on the island remains at about 80%, but with refreshing onshore winds, a range of cool fruity cocktails available and the relaxing calm waters off its coast, the humidity is no problem at all.
Formerly a quiet fishing village, San Pedro is today a compact but bustling village with its sandy streets lined by tiki bars, dive shops and waterfront restaurants offering delicious, fresh seafood. The village of San Pedro has a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere and the waterfront restaurants and bars are the best places to watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea. The island’s proximity to the barrier reef means that the main activity here is diving, especially at the Great Blue Hole, although there is plenty to do as a non-scuba diver too. Aside from swimming and sunbathing at Ambergris, you can sail, fish, kayak or windsurf, visit the nearby and laid-back Caye Caulker or snorkel with sharks and stingrays at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. At the southern tip of Ambergris, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve covers an area of 6.5 sq.miles. With spectacular coral formations and an abundance of marine life diversity, it is Belize’s if not one of the world’s best spot for diving and snorkeling. Within the marine reserve is Shark Ray Alley which will give you the unique chance to snorkel and swim with laid back nurse sharks and southern stingrays.

The Unmissable Adventures of Belize’s Cayo District
Our Travel Specialist Alex, explored the beauty of Guatemala last week and earlier this week, she made the short journey across the border to neighboring Belize. Her first stop was in the Cayo District located in the western Belize and bordering Guatemala’s Maya region of El Petén. A vast highland stretch of rainforests, cattle ranches and pinelands; the Cayo District has some of the country’s most rugged andremote terrain.
The Cayo District is the region you head to not for beaches (as there are none), but for the chance to explore the great outdoors and Maya ruins on foot, by horse, or via kayak, raft, or canoe.
The Cayo District houses the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve which is the oldest and largest National Park in Belize. Here you’ll find caves to explore, cool rivers to swim in, and a vast expanse of forest that’s home to myriad tropical birds. It is also has one of Belize’s most spectacular Maya ruins at Xunantunich and Caracol. Belmopan, the country’s capital, is located in Cayo, though the real hub of the district is San Ignacio, a small town located 68 miles from Belize City. San Ignacio has beautiful colonial architecture to explore, an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops, a bustling weekly market, and Maya ruins no more than a stone’s throw away. The list of sights and activities to do in the Cayo District is endless meaning all you have to do is enjoy the limitless opportunities.

♦ Xunantunich’s Impressive Maya Ruins
The adventure of visiting the Xunantunich Maya site begins by taking a small hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River as there is no bridge here, adding to the pure sense of discovery and exploration. After disembarking from the boat, you’ll arrive at the spectacular site of Xunantunich. Although smaller than other Maya sites in Belize, it is a fascinating site and provides unmissable picturesque and beautiful views of the surrounding rainforest scenery from atop the main temple. With 6 main plazas and more than 25 Maya temples and palaces, the centerpiece known as ‘El Castillo’ is the tallest pyramid on the site and second largest in Belize. The 130ft. tall El Castillo also shows off some of the most detailed and preserved frieze carvings on its east and west sides.

♦ Beautiful Barton Creek & the Butterfly Farm
Situated between two hills covered in lush vegetation is a colorful and charming Butterfly Farm. Exploring this beautiful butterfly sanctuary you’ll learn about the butterflies of this area which range from brilliant blue and intense orange to dazzling yellow. Having experienced the magic of walking among the rainbow of colorful butterflies, you will continue to Barton Creek where you’ll be able to enjoy the diversity of Belize’s Cayo District. Having lowered yourself into your canoe and equipped with high powered lights, you’ll paddle along the gentle river and into the Barton Creek cave system known as Xibalba which is Maya for ‘the underworld’. Stalactites rise up and stalagmites hang high overhead as you float past impressive crystal formations in this 4-mile long cave system. The Barton Creek cave is of high Mayan significance as it was used for ceremonial purposes and an ancient burial site for the Mayans adding to the mysterious beauty of this adventure.

♦ Caracol & the Adventurous Rio Frio Caves
The breath-taking Maya site of Caracol, meaning ‘snail’ got its namesake by the archaeologists working in the area as they found snail lather on the site. Caracol’s original name is in fact ‘Oxwitza’ which means the ‘Sky Palace’ as it’s the largest archeological site in Belize. Surrounded by approximately 30 sq. miles of thick, high canopy jungle, are 5 plazas, an astronomic observatory and over 35,000 buildings that have been identified. The highest among them, is the massive pyramid called ‘Caana’ which is capped by 3 temples and rises over 140ft. above the jungle floor and still is one of the largest man-made structures in Belize. From the impressive site of Caracol, the Rio Frio Cave and Pools is one of Belize’s most photogenic places to visit. Whether you want to squeeze and crawl through tight gaps, climb and rappel or swim in the cool Rio Frio waters, there is a cave that suits every adventure need. While the adventure of the Rio Frio Cave and pools is the main attraction, this is one of most naturally beautiful places in Belize. With unrivaled rock formations and used by the Mayans, you will be able to take some of your best vacation photos from within this impressive cave and pool system.
